You mean benchmarking? I suppose benchmarking might be one for of an external evaluation. Organizations need ot know how they are perceived, and gathering bad press isnt really on anyones agenda. One external bench my organization consistently sweats is the top companies to work for list. We're one of only four to make every list put out in the US, and we are appearing on the lists of other countries we have sites as well. The organization puts alot of energy into retaining this placement with internal surveys, then responding to the surveys accordingly. I know of a healthcare organization that gears its outreach programs towards the population around them. Census info told them the population was older, they invested their energy in developing programs older people need, like heart care and cancer screenings. (A younger population might need more nutrition counselling, or floride supplements or something.)
