What is a good content management system to set up an article directory?

I'm looking for an open source content management system to build an article directory like Ezines or GoArticles. I'm very familiar with Wordpress, but it doesn't seem like that would be a good platform. It would have to be a system where users could register, submit articles and manage their accounts. You don't need a plugin for Joomla to do what you are describing you can set different user accounts to give them the ability to publish articles to your site.
